The Warp and Weft of History
2016-2018, multimedia
In the Fall of 2016 I began a project called the Warp and Weft of History as a collaboration with The New Historia, an organization dedicated to the discovery and recovery of women’s intellectual contributions through time and around the globe.
I structured the project around the idea that history is fluid, something similar to Aby Warburg’s ideas presented in the Mnemosyne Atlas. Perhaps history is like a tapestry on a loom, which has been woven in such a way that certain patterns are revealed and that women who’s threads have been hidden can be revealed once again in their larger patterns.
I was further inspired by the work and writings of artist and weaver Anni Albers who taught at the Bauhaus and was a leading mind in the formation of Black Mountain College. In her work she proposes that weaving is as similar to writing as it is to painting as it is to any other creative and improvisational pursuit.
Weaving has a deeply symbolic and mythological history which I extracted images and texts from to create a varied body of work which consisted of writings, projections, videos, presentations, and graphics.
